“Lucy Is Enceinte” (Season 2, Episode 10)
Television hardly ever featured expecting females before the 1950s (except for the often overlooked Mary Kay and Johnny sitcom in’ forty eight), so the announcement that Ricky and Lucy (and Arnaz and Ball) will be having a baby was a crowd thrilling surprise. In “Lucy Is Enceinte,” Lucy learns she is pregnant and tries to craft the ideal way to tell Ricky. She is constantly interrupted and finally sends him an anonymous note during one of his shows at Tropicana nightclub asking he sing to help an expecting wife break the news to her husband. Ricky sings to each couple in the club, but nobody owns up to composing the note and it only comes to Lucy that he figures it out. The message is clear even though the show never uses the word “pregnant.”
“Ricky Has Labor Pains” (Season 2, Episode 14)
Ricky’s excitement with regards to the baby becomes jealousy when a distraught Lucy appears to be getting all the attention of their family and friends. Ricky becomes sick and begins to show signs and signs of pregnancy and labor which a doctor diagnoses because of being neglected. In order to make Ricky better, Lucy asks Fred to give him a “Daddy Shower.” Fearing the party might get too much to handle, Lucy and Ethel choose to crash the event dressed as males. Ricky picks up the farce quickly.
